Choate’s Intellectual Property Group Named to IAM Patent 1000

Choate has been named in the 2014 edition of the IAM Patent 1000: The World’s Leading Patent Practitioners for “showcasing one of the most complete patent practices in the state. (Choate’s) prosecution capabilities are especially lauded and, when it comes to securing cast-iron protection for landscape-defining life sciences inventions, few can best it.”

Seven Choate attorneys –Dr. Brenda Herschbach Jarrell, Dr. Charles Lyon, Karen Copenhaver, Robert Frank Jr., Eric Marandett, and Carlos Perez-Albuerne – were selected for inclusion as top intellectual property practitioners.

According to IAM Patent 1000, as co-chair of Choate’s Intellectual Property (IP) and Life Sciences Groups, the “terrific” and top-rated Dr. Brenda Herschbach Jarrell garners plaudits from local and international sources.  She combines superlative technical credentials in biotechnology and pharmaceuticals with innate commercial sense.  Astute IP strategist and chemistry ace Charles Lyon prosecutes patents while also maintaining a busy transactional practice.  One peer comments: “He is a life sciences star.”

On the software licensing side, commentators highlight Karen Copenhaver.  The litigation ensemble continues to impress, too, particularly when Robert Frank Jr. puts his shoulder to the wheel.  The veteran trial lawyer dexterously handles a mix of pharmaceutical and high technology cases; so too does litigation department co-chair Eric Marandett, whose sharp presentation skills are the result of diverse commercial and IP litigation experience.  Having represented clients all over the country, Carlos Perez-Albuerne has a national reputation for excellence in technology-related disputes.

The IAM Patent 1000 is a guide to the top patent practitioners in key jurisdictions around the globe.  Based on interviews with almost 1,500 attorneys at law firms, patent attorneys and in-house counsel, individuals qualify for a listing when they receive sufficient positive feedback from peers and clients with knowledge of their practice and the market within which they operate.  According to IAM, “only those individuals identified by market sources for their exceptional skill sets and profound insights into patent matters feature in the IAM Patent 1000.”
