Choate successfully represented Hewlett-Packard in a major contract dispute relating to HP’s claim that Oracle is obligated to port its software to certain of HP’s platforms.  Choate handled the cross-examination of Oracle’s principal witnesses in California Superior Court, and the Court ultimately ruled in our client’s favor—repeatedly citing testimony elicited on cross-examination.  Oracle has since resumed porting its software as demanded by HP.

welcome to choate

Choate is in some ways similar to most highly successful law firms, but in important other ways we are distinctly different from the vast majority of other major firms. We are proud of these differences and believe they materially benefit our clients and our lawyers.

Choate has been one of the country's premier law firms for over a century.  Our mission is to help important clients capitalize on their most promising opportunities, find solutions to their most pressing problems, and provide exceptional judgment, service and value.  We also maintain as a core value giving back to the community which has given so much to us.

We've chosen to pursue an increasingly unusual business model.  We recruit and develop only the best and brightest, with all of our lawyers and staff under one roof.  We focus on a select group of areas where we practice at the highest level representing clients across the US and internationally.  We have decided not to adopt the highly-leveraged multiple branch office structure many other major firms have embraced.

Our partners are leaders in their practice areas, actively and directly engaged on client matters and known for their legal skill and business judgment. They work directly with associates to train and develop our next generation of exceptional lawyers.

We offer dedicated, leanly-staffed client teams with direct access to senior trusted advisors who work together every day, from one central location, with a common approach and shared values. Our single office allows us to seamlessly draw on the Firm's collective resources, and promotes teamwork and collaboration within Choate and with our clients.

We have no interest in being one of the world's largest law firms.  We are, and aspire to be, among the very best firms in each of the areas where we practice.  Our focus, talent and depth in our core areas allow us to work on the most complex and sensitive matters and to provide the uniform excellence and cost-effective service which clients rightfully expect.

We are privileged to have many long-standing client relationships.  We are also privileged to create new client relationships each year, with most new clients coming to us after recommendations from existing clients who are "promoters" of the Firm.

Choate is a place of high energy and high standards.  Whether you are a current client, prospective client or someone interested in joining us, we invite you to explore our site and see what makes Choate special and different.

Thanks for your interest in Choate and all the best.
