Choate Press Release

 | May 13, 2005

Attorney Brenda Jarrell, chair of the Life Sciences Group at Choate has been named to the National Law Journal’s prestigious “40 Under 40” list.  The NLJ’s list, which is compiled every few years, identifies leading young attorneys in various areas of law across the country who have already attained an impressive record of achievement in their fields, and who will continue to exert influence in the legal profession.  Dr. Jarrell was the only Massachusetts lawyer to make the list this year.

Dr. Jarrell, 37, was recognized for a practice that revolves around the intersection of law and business with the chemical and biological sciences.  With a focus on patent protection, licensing, and litigation work for pharmaceutical companies, medical institutions, and biotech firms, Dr. Jarrell has amassed an impressive client list that includes Bayer Corp., Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, Eisai Co., Harvard Institute of Chemistry and Cell Biology, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York.  She is the only known life sciences patent attorney with a side practice in quantum mechanics.  She recently aided an emerging technology company in soliciting a patent on a system for reconstituting dinosaur DNA from fossils.  She also helped a client patent a device that amplifies quanta of sound, similar to how a laser amplifies quanta of light.

Dr. Jarrell received a B.A. magna cum laude from Harvard College at age 19 and an M.A. in chemistry from Harvard University at age 20.  She received her Ph.D. from the University of California, San Francisco in biochemistry and molecular biology at age 25 and her J.D. from Harvard Law School by age 30.

Choate, Hall & Stewart LLP is a leading law firm with nationally recognized practices in private equity, technology, intellectual property, mergers and acquisitions, commercial litigation, and insurance and reinsurance litigation.  The firm’s clients range from Fortune 100 companies to leading venture capital and buyout funds to technology startups.
