Karen Copenhaver, a partner in Business & Technology, has been chosen by Mass High Tech for its prestigious “Mass High Tech All-Stars Award,” which honors the thought leaders and innovators throughout the New England technology sector.  Ms. Copenhaver is the fifth lawyer to ever receive an “All-Stars Award” in its 13-year history.  The award winners will be celebrated at an event at The Charles Hotel in Cambridge on October 30.

Ms. Copenhaver, a well-known intellectual property lawyer, was chosen for this coveted award because of her vast experience handling the complexities of open source software licensing and business models for high profile technology companies.  There are few in the industry who know more about open source communities than Ms. Copenhaver.

“Karen is truly in a class by herself.  She is one of the absolute top experts in the open source field and is an ‘All Star’ in every sense of the word.  We are very proud of her and thrilled to see this honor bestowed upon her,” said William Gelnaw and John Nadas, co-managing partners of Choate.

In addition to her work at Choate, Ms. Copenhaver serves as co-legal counsel for the Linux Foundation, where she works closely with some of the world’s best technology companies including IBM, HP, Intel, Google, Dell, Oracle, Sun, Cisco, Adobe, Hitachi, NEC, Novell, Fujitsu, Motorola, EMC, Nokia, Siemens, Texas Instruments, Toshiba, and Mitsubishi Electric.  One of her recent accomplishments for the Linux Foundation was assisting in the development of the Creative Commons amici brief in the Jacobsen v. Katzer case.  This case was the first real test of the remedies for breach of open source licenses in US courts, and the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit upheld open source software licenses for the first time.

Ms. Copenhaver also is a frequent speaker on technology licensing and open source software, making more than 20 national and international presentations a year at events related to the adoption and management of open source technology.  She is regularly listed as a leading lawyer in her field in Chambers USA, Legal 500, and as a Massachusetts Super Lawyer.

Ms. Copenhaver received her JD from Dickinson School of Law in 1979 and her BA from Dickinson College in 1976.
