Choate announced today that William B. Asher, Jr., co-chair of the firm’s Business & Technology and Life Sciences Groups, has been named a “Leading M&A Lawyer” by The Legal 500, a guide to the preeminent law firms in the United States.  Asher was one of only 24 attorneys in the country named to the elite “Leading Lawyers” list in the mergers & acquisitions (M&A) category.  This is the third consecutive year that Asher has been named a “Leading Lawyer” by the publication.

Choate’s Tier 1 M&A practice “mostly handles deals in the $10m-$500m range, and...has deep experience advising technology and life sciences companies on cross-border transactions.”  Other recommended Choate lawyers include Brian Goldstein, co-chair of the Business & Technology Group and Frederick Callori.

Asher has more than 30 years of experience in corporate finance and securities law, venture capital, M&A, and corporate governance.  He focuses his practice primarily on technology and life sciences, including representation of private and public companies, entrepreneurs and senior management, underwriters, and investors.

Asher was named the 2014 Boston “Lawyer of the Year” for both Corporate Compliance Law and Securities Regulation by Best Lawyers.  He has been listed for many years in Chambers USA and Massachusetts Super Lawyers.  He is a former member of the firm’s Executive Committee.  He received his JD, cum laude, from Harvard Law School in 1974 and his BA, cum laude, from Harvard College in 1970.

Six additional practice areas at Choate – Finance & Restructuring, Insurance & Reinsurance, Private Equity, Tax, Trade Secrets, and Venture Capital – received top national rankings as well. In the Litigation area, Joan Lukey was named a “Leading Trial Lawyer” in this coveted ranking.

The Legal 500 conducts extensive research to analyze and assess the capabilities and strengths of law firms.  The resulting rankings provide buyers of legal services with an objective analysis of the US market. Research includes in-depth interviews with law firms, clients, and lawyers across the country.  Inclusion in The Legal 500 is based solely on merit and the guides are widely regarded as offering the definitive judgment of law firm capabilities.
