Managing IP Names Seven Choate Attorneys "IP Stars"

Managing IP recognizes seven Choate attorneys – Michael S. Bunis, Robert S. Frank Jr., Dr. William R. Haulbrook, Dr. Brenda Herschbach Jarrell, Dr. Charles Lyon, Eric J. Marandett, Dr. Rolando Medina – in its 2022 guide of “IP Stars.”

Michael Bunis, Co-Chair of Choate’s IP litigation Group, helps biotech, pharmaceutical, and other life sciences and technology clients to grow and protect their core competitive advantage, their intellectual property assets. With over 27 years of experience, he has successfully tried cases before juries and judges throughout the United States, where he is a go-to resource for a range of high stakes disputes including patent litigation, trade secret, commercial litigation, and other intellectual property disputes.

Bob Frank is a partner in the Intellectual Property Litigation Group. He focuses his practice on complex business and intellectual property disputes, routinely making headlines for his high-profile, often “bet the technology,” global engagements. Described by Chambers USA as “a world-class trial lawyer whose ability to understand what is needed to win the case is his greatest strength,” Bob’s expertise is relied upon by some of the most recognizable technology brands in the world to solve their most important problems. He is a former managing partner of Choate.

Dr. Bill Haulbrook specializes in building comprehensive patent portfolios to support clients’ business objectives in the U.S., Europe, and Asia. His practice focuses on procurement and enforcement of intellectual property rights, with emphasis on strategic development of U.S. and foreign patent portfolios, patent infringement and validity opinions, reexaminations, oppositions, patent licensing, and general IP diligence in a variety of fields, including medical imaging and diagnostics, computer software, LEDs, nanocomposites, advanced materials, industrial processes, polymers and composites, energy, semiconductor manufacturing, industrial chemistry, and petroleum processing.

Dr. Brenda Jarrell is co-chair of the Life Sciences and Intellectual Property Groups. Described by clients as an IP lawyer with keen business savvy, her extensive technical credentials make her well versed in a wide variety of technologies in the biotech, pharmaceutical, and specialty chemical industries. She represents companies and institutions at all stages of the life sciences business lifecycle, as well as those who invest in them, guiding IP protection and competitive positioning strategies, negotiating strategic transactions, and providing creative solutions to IP and technology-related challenges.

Dr. Charles Lyon is co-chair of the Intellectual Property Group. His practice spans all areas of patent protection and counseling with a particular focus on IPRs, reexaminations, IP due diligence, and freedom-to-operate or landscape analyses. He is particularly sought after for his deep knowledge of various cell and gene therapy landscapes and for his efficiency and ability to clearly communicate those issues that are most likely to affect the overall valuation of the underlying transaction or the risks associated with a particular IP dispute. His background as a chemist means that he is also routinely called upon by clients in the pharmaceutical and chemical industries.

Eric Marandett is co-chair of the Intellectual Property Litigation Group. He represents biotech, pharmaceutical, and technology companies in high stakes patent litigation and other intellectual property and commercial disputes. He is a seasoned trial lawyer who brings strong business acumen and courtroom skills to every litigation he handles.

Dr. Rolando Medina has broad experience in intellectual property, including patent prosecution, opinions, due diligence studies, IP counseling and licensing in biotechnology and the medical sciences. He has experience representing academic universities and start-up companies, as well as mid-sized and large biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies. He was previously named to Who’s Who Legal’s list of top Life Sciences transactional attorneys.
