Managing IP Names Six Choate Partners Global “IP Stars”

Six Choate partners – Bob Frank, Dr. William Haulbrook, Dr. Charles Lyon, Dr. Brenda Herschbach Jarrell, Eric Marandett, and Dr. Rolando Medina – have been singled out by Managing Intellectual Property Magazine as Global “IP Stars” on the publication’s annual list of the world’s leading intellectual property attorneys. Dr. Jarrell was also ranked on MIP’s “Top 250 Women in IP” list.

Mr. Frank is a partner in the Intellectual Property Litigation Group. He focuses his practice on complex business and intellectual property disputes, routinely making headlines for his high-profile, often “bet the technology,” global engagements. Described by Chambers USA as “a world-class trial lawyer whose ability to understand what is needed to win the case is his greatest strength,” Bob’s expertise is relied upon by some of the most recognizable technology brands in the world to solve their most important problems. He is a former managing partner of Choate.

Dr. Haulbrook is a partner in the Intellectual Property Group. He focuses on the procurement, enforcement, and licensing of intellectual property rights, with emphasis on strategic development of U.S. and foreign patent portfolios, patent infringement and validity opinions, IPRs, reexaminations/reissues, oppositions, and IP diligence in a variety of high tech fields.

Dr. Lyon is co-chair of the Intellectual Property Group. His practice spans all areas of patent protection and counseling with a particular focus on IPRs, reexaminations, IP due diligence, and freedom-to-operate or landscape analyses. Dr. Lyon is particularly sought after for his deep knowledge of various cell and gene therapy landscapes and for his efficiency and ability to clearly communicate those issues that are most likely to affect the overall valuation of the underlying transaction or the risks associated with a particular IP dispute.  Dr. Lyon’s background as a chemist means that he is also routinely called upon by clients in the pharmaceutical and chemical industries.

Dr. Jarrell is co-chair of the Life Sciences and Intellectual Property Groups. Described by clients as an IP lawyer with keen business savvy, her extensive technical credentials make her well versed in a wide variety of technologies in the biotech, pharmaceutical, and specialty chemical industries. Dr. Jarrell represents companies and institutions at all stages of the life sciences business lifecycle, as well as those who invest in them, guiding IP protection and competitive positioning strategies, negotiating strategic transactions, and providing creative solutions to IP and technology-related challenges. She is a member of the Firm’s Executive Committee.

Dr. Medina is a partner in the Life Sciences and Intellectual Property Groups. He has broad experience in IP, including patent prosecution, opinions, due diligence studies, IP counseling and licensing in biotechnology and the medical sciences. Dr. Medina has experience representing academic universities and start-up companies, as well as mid-sized and large biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies. In 2017, he was named to Who’s Who Legal’s list of top Life Sciences transactional attorneys.

Mr. Marandett is co-chair of the Intellectual Property Litigation Group. He represents biotech, pharmaceutical, and technology companies in high stakes patent litigation and other intellectual property and commercial disputes. Mr. Marandett is a seasoned trial lawyer who brings strong business acumen and courtroom skills to every litigation he handles. He is a member of the Firm’s Executive Committee.
