Choate Promotes Four to Counsel

Four Choate attorneys – Mark DeFeo, Renat Lumpau, John Rearick, and Anita Spiethhave been named counsel at the Firm, effective May 1, 2017.

As Counsel in the Firm’s Private Equity Practice Group, Mark DeFeo will continue to focus his practice on representing investment firms and emerging companies in acquisitions, growth equity financings, impact investments, and other strategic transactions. He will also serve as outside general counsel to portfolio companies and other businesses, advising on corporate governance, executive compensation, recapitalizations and other strategic business matters. Mr. DeFeo’s experience spans numerous industries, including technology, renewable energy, healthcare, and food & beverage, and includes the representation of diverse businesses, from funds and start-ups to benefit corporations and other mission-oriented enterprises. He has been named a Massachusetts Super Lawyer Rising Star. He received his J.D., with honors, from Boston College Law School in 2009 and his B.A., with honors, from Boston College in 2006.

As counsel in the Firm’s Wealth Management Practice Group, Renat Lumpau will continue to focus his practice on providing sophisticated tax and estate planning advice for U.S. and international clients. His clients include private equity and hedge fund principals, business owners, government officials, sports team owners, high net worth foreign nationals and beneficiaries of wealth legacies. Mr. Lumpau has been named repeatedly as a Massachusetts Super Lawyers Rising Star. He received his J.D., with honors, from Harvard Law School in 2009 and his B.A., with honors, from Harvard University in 2003.

As counsel in the Firm’s Intellectual Property and Life Sciences Practice Groups, John Rearick, PhD will continue to focus his practice on crafting strategic IP protection in the life science and chemical landscapes, as well as positioning clients’ technology for licensing and partnering opportunities. In addition to prosecuting patent applications on behalf of public and private institutions, biotechnology companies, and pharmaceutical companies, Dr. Rearick performs IP due diligence in a variety of in-licensing and investment contexts, with specific expertise in pharmaceuticals. Dr. Rearick is a Massachusetts Super Lawyers Rising Star. He received his J.D. from Boston University School of Law in 2013, his PhD in Chemistry from Harvard University in 2007, his A.M. in Chemistry from Harvard University in 2004, and his B.S. from Purdue University in 2001.

As counsel in the Firm’s Intellectual Property Litigation Practice Group, Anita Spieth will continue to focus her practice on counseling clients in patent, trade secret, copyright and trademark litigation on behalf of leading corporations, frequently including software and hardware developers, telecommunications and internet service providers and biotechnology companies. Ms. Spieth has been named a Massachusetts Super Lawyers Rising Star. She received her J.D. from Harvard Law School in 2009 and her B.A., with honors, from Boston College in 2004.
